JOHN HURT TRIBUTE! - CALLING IT A WRAP WITH SIR JOHN AS WINSTON SMITH IN "1984" - THE HORROR!

John Hurt's 8 Most Memorable Scifi and Fantasy Movie Roles

The sad news of John Hurt's passing naturally got us thinking about his long career-particularly his many wonderful contributions to science fiction and fantasy films (this is io9, after all). We've gathered our eight favorite John Hurt scifi and fantasy movie roles here.

John Hurt's most famous roles

HERE ARE SOME OF SIR JOHN HURT'S MOST NOTABLE ROLES: The Elephant Man (1980) Hurt played the role of severely deformed Englishman John Merrick in the historical drama film set in the late 19th century.

Dailytimes | In tribute to John Hurt: Potter fans raise their wands for Ollivander's death

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone most memorable scene of all times was the one in which Ollivander handed Harry Potter several wands until Harry chose 11 inches wand that possessed Phoenix feather and was made of holly. "The wand chooses the wizard, Mr Potter. It's not always clear why.

JOHN HURT TRIBUTE! - OF THINGS PERTAINING TO "LOVE & DEATH ON LONG ISLAND" - THE HORROR!

In 1997, Sir John played a man going thru a midlife crisis who finds himself infatuated with a younger film star. This UK/Canadian indie has a mellow charm to it that is very unique and the whole thing is shot in Nova Scotia. This is one of those classics that separates the movie lovers from the movie goers....The Horror!!

Love and Death on Long Island Movie Review (1998) | Roger Ebert

A creaky British writer, who has lived for decades in a cocoon of his books and his musings, locks himself out of the house one day in the rain. He takes refuge in a nearby movie theater, choosing a film based on a novel by Forster. After a time, he murmurs, "This isn't E.M.

THREE DOG NIGHT 1983! - THE HORROR KNOWN AS "IT'S A JUNGLE OUT THERE" COMEBACK EP...NOT!

Greetings all, got a double-shot of Three Dog Night 1983 on a Sun Day. This was an attempt at a comeback for the band that went thud, umph...thud. To longtime Three Dog Night fans it was the last gasp, the five songs here are a mixed lot at best. As usual all three have entries with lead vocals and the voices are great and the songs of quality but just way too little too late to be any kind of success....The Horror!! 7daylink Vinyl rip of above, no other versions exist incl digital

JOHN HURT TRIBUTE! - THE YEAR IS 1978 AND THE ROLE A JUNKIE PRISONER IN "MIDNIGHT EXPRESS"

Sir John's role as the helpless junkie prisoner in Midnight Express won him an Oscar nomination back in 1978.
Again, crazy as it sounds I could not find a scene with John in it as video on You Tube,
So I made my own, 20 sec short taste here>

The cult film that had disastrous consequences for Turkish film

It was one of Alan Parker's greatest movies - a gut-wrenching prison epic with an Oliver Stone script and pounding Giorgio Moroder music. Midnight Express (1978), produced by David Puttnam, won two Oscars and very quickly assumed cult status.

STONES 1969! - "STONE-AGED" CLASSIC VINYL BOOT SAN DIEGO SHOW ON TMOQ LABEL - THE HORROR!

While the entire classic San Diego 1969 show has been traded for decades now, this is the original 1-lp vinyl boot on Trade Mark Of Quality. The vinyl rip is nice and from a very clean copy, n-joy....The Horror!! 7daylink Rating A trivia-this was recorded with the same shotgun mic used to record both Liver Than You'll Ever Be and Zep's Blueberry Hill
"The Stones' 1969 tour produced both Ya-Ya's and Live'r Than You'll Ever Be, one of the essential early boots, recorded in Oakland, but their November 10th San Diego set is every bit as good. Yes, the sound is boxy, but nothing is going to rein in something like this version of "Sympathy for the Devil." Richards solos first, then Taylor, and the coda that comes swaggering out of that badassery might be the most intense thing they ever did." - Rolling Stone

JOHN HURT TRIBUTE! - MR DICKINSON'S GATEKEEPER IN 1995's "DEAD MAN" - THE SHEER HORROR!

Oh my, another big Tommy favorite John Hurt performance as the accounting manager and gatekeeper to Mr Dickenson at the good ole metal works company in the city of Machine. A brilliantly hilarious scene....The Horror!!

ROD STEWART & THE FACES 1971! - 3 DISTINCT VERSIONS OF "I'M LOSING YOU"- THE HORROR!

KENNEY JONES ON THE DRUMS!
x3
Greetings all, hope your weekend is off to a horrific start. A big big hit for ole Rod in 1971 and my first introduction to his music at age 10 when the local Italian restaurant in Brooklyn my dad used to take me to had it on their jukebox. I must have drained ole pops of countless quarters wanting to play that 45 again and again. Version one is that version. Secondly a video (the audio of which is regularly traded as BBC '71) of a smokin' version and lastly a very rare 1974 live version dated 12-7-74 at Swing Auditorium and only available on an out-of-print "best of" KBFH cd....The Horror!!
1 - Rod snakes the tune for his solo album although most of the Faces perform on the track.
2 - BBC Live version from approx 2 weeks after it was tracked in the studio.
3 - Three years later the Faces are at their peak.

JOHN HURT TRIBUTE! - THE YEAR IS 2003, HE STARS AS WISE CRACKING CASINO BOSS - THE HORROR!!

One of my very favorite John Hurt performances - Sir John plays a wise-cracking casino manager more than a little obsessed with bringing money into the place in this critically acclaimed Canadian film based on a true story. Phillip Hoffman plays a gambling addict who keeps filching money from his bank where he's an account manager to feed his habit. One of those great cinematic below-the-radar screen flicks you don't want to miss.....The Horror!!  Pinewoods Rating System - Four Pinewoods

Owning Mahowny Movie Review & Film Summary (2003) | Roger Ebert

"Owning Mahowny" is about a man seized helplessly with tunnel vision, in the kind of tunnel that has no light at either end. He is a gambler. Cut off temporarily by his bookie, he asks incredulously, "What am I supposed to do? Go out to the track and watch ?"

Owning Mahowny | Reelviews Movie Reviews

Owning Mahowny casts an unflinching gaze into a window of addiction of a sort not often portrayed in movies. Based on the true-life book
Unfortunately, I could not find any single scenes with Sir John but the trailer below has him prominently>

RUSH 2004! - REVISITING THE HORROR KNOWN AS "FEEDBACK" AN 8-SONG EP OF ROCK COVERS

A ghastly exhibit if there ever was one- An album of Rush doing covers of The Who, Neil Young, Yardbirds and more. It plopped out on cd in 2004, made a minor thud on the floor and then vanished from most people's screens. The general consensus is that it's great stuff as Rush certainly puts their energy into these old classics but it's running time of 28 minutes is too little too soon or just under-developed. Still, the baddest ass three-piece in all of rock n roll makes a solid try and it's certainly an enjoyable 28 minutes, great to put on when working out....The Horror!!
